Internet Explorer | Upgrade and make a difference
As a web designer and developer, it is safe to say that I am not a fan of the Internet Explorer browser. In particular, Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) that causes more issues and restricts design and functionality more than any other browser currently in use. Despite there being an upgrade available since October of 2006 IE6, still managers to stay alive on a number of computers and networks.
Why you might ask? I can only speculate that IE6 continues to find life for primarily three reasons:
- Less than savvy users are unaware that they can upgrade, how to do this or why it matters.
- Network administrators are too lazy, overworked or under skilled to upgrade the browser version being used on their networks. (I am talking to you Mr./Mrs. IT staffer working at the city)
- There are some evil forces at work here (I am guessing some sort of Greek god) who has chosen the web development community as their personal target to torment.
Whatever the true reasons maybe let me offer up one possible argument why you should upgrade your browser. Not even Microsoft wants you to stay with your old browser!
To prove this I present you with Microsoft's Browser for the Better program (www.browserforthebetter.com). Microsoft has collaborated with Feeding America and will donate eight meals for every download of IE8 from this site. If you are upgrading from IE6 they will double that donation.
So I ask you once again, no I beg you, if you are going to continue to use Internet Explorer at least accept the challenge and upgrade to the newest version. You will not only be helping the web become a more usable place but will also be helping a great cause.
