Event Description:

Plan to share your successes and challenges in building the board chair/executive director partnership that works best for your nonprofit. Working together, board chairs and executive directors can help the nonprofits they serve to thrive. Pulling apart, chairs and executive directors may distract the energy of both board and staff members. Join board leaders and executive directors to explore an amazing variety of strategies to build effective shared leadership.

Join your colleagues - executive directors and board chairs - as we explore strategies to:

  • Strengthen the board chair/executive director relationship
  • Clarify the leadership roles of the chair and the ED
  • Provide mutual support during times of change and stress
  • Help board chairs provide effective oversight without micro-management

Best practices for nonprofit boards generally emphasize the need for continual development of new board leadership. Planned transitions in board leadership create opportunities for new leadership styles and potentially bring new energy and focus to boards. But for executive directors, the need for new board leadership may necessitate a work lifestyle strangely akin to serial monogamy - with a new partner entering this pivotal relationship every few years. Learn how board chairs and executive directors can build relationships which support the best in leadership abilities, while ensuring effective board oversight and providing dependable board support for the ED.

Cathey Briggs is the Interim Executive Director of TACS. As an affiliate of TACS Executive Transition Service, Cathey has worked as an Interim ED with 7 organizations and 7 Board Chairs - each with a unique style. Cathey has also been a non-profit Board Chair or Board committee member for a number of non-profit organizations so brings with her that perspective as well.

Leon Laptook is Director of the Community Development Law Center CDLC, a program of Legal Aid Services of Oregon. In his position at CDLC, Leon works with tax exempt corporations throughout the State. He provides strategic planning as well as training to nonprofits in the rights and responsibilities of corporate board members. Leon has experience both as a Board President and as an Executive Director of a non-profit.
