In Privilege, Power and Difference, author Allan G. Johnson writes, "In dealing with the problem of privilege, we have to get used to being surrounded by paradox. Very often, those who have privilege don't know it. . .privilege does not necessarily lead to a 'good life'. . .it involves having what others don't have and the struggle to hang on to it at their expense." Progressive individuals often think of privilege as an unearned advantage in our society that warrants guilt. However, we can reframe it as an asset to be used for positive change.
Privilege in nonprofit organizations impacts how we provide services to clients, assess needs, design programs, manage organizations, and relate to coworkers with more or less organizational power than ourselves. Privilege is at the core of efforts to diversify, build culturally competent organizations, and deal effectively with differences. As we deepen our understanding of privilege, we can greatly enhance the capacity of our organizations. Join Guadalupe Guajardo, PhD, TACS Senior Consultant and co-founder of "Tools for Diversity," for a challenging and meaningful exploration of privilege and how to use it effectively for good in our workplace.
