Event Description

Experience breeds wisdom, as they say. In this session of the NFMA, learn what not to do through the experience of others. Pamela Davis, founder and CEO of the member companies of the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance Group (NIAG), will offer a lively and entertaining presentation about risk management in the nonprofit sector.

We'll discuss:
• Common myths about nonprofit risk management
• The bad and the ugly—five juicy claims (don't try this at your organization)
• What goes wrong—if you can't stop it from happening, how can you pay for it?

Pamela will share claims stories from the vaults of NIAG, and you'll find out which areas of exposure suffer the most and the largest claims. You'll walk away with practical risk management tips for various exposure areas.

Pamela Davis hatched the idea for the thriving member companies of the NIAG in her Master's thesis at UC Berkeley over 20 years ago. She proposed that instead of relying on commercial insurance companies that were inconsistent in their willingness to provide affordable insurance, the nonprofit sector could gain control of this important financial service. Her dream was to engage nonprofits in risk management by providing subsidized management services as part of the insurance purchase, and share that good fortune with the members that made it happen. That dream has come true. Together, NIAG insures 9,500 nonprofits in 24 states and the District of Columbia.
