Event Description

Fundraising provides the essential fuel and life-blood to sustain most nonprofit organizations. More money translates into more resources available to fulfill our organizational missions and serve the community.

However, every organization has questions about fundraising that must be answered:

  • Why is it so hard? How can we make it easier?
  • How do we motivate people to raise money enthusiastically?
  • Given our current conditions, what should we be trying to accomplish with our fundraising efforts?
  • How can strategic planning, board development, and community outreach all contribute to more effective fundraising?
  • How do we move from "talking about raising money" to "raising money"?
  • What are the best roles for board members, committee members, advisors, and staff members to play in fundraising?

In this network session, presenter Marc Smiley will get to the heart of fundraising - defining it as something more than "shaking people down for money." We'll explore fundraising strategy, and identify ways to help organizations move from planning to successful implementation.

Marc Smiley, Principal of Decisions Decisions in Portland, Oregon, has worked with nonprofit organizations as a director, fundraiser, board member, trustee, and advisor. For the last twenty years, he has been a consultant to several hundred organizations focusing on governance, planning, structure, and fundraising.
