Event Description
In this session of the TACS/RVDP training series, this panel of nonprofit leaders will explore:
- Why nonprofit leadership may be tougher than leading a business
- Essentials for nonprofit leadership: humility and professional will
- How to build momentum by cultivating emotional goodwill and mindshare
Nonprofit leaders are finally given the respect they deserve in Jim Collins' essay Good to Great and the Social Sector. When Collins, best known for his business focused best seller Good to Great, turned his attention to the nonprofit sector, he emerged with a new respect for the complexity of leadership in philanthropic organizations. He points out the need for nonprofit executives to "architect the conditions for the right decisions to happen" through bringing the right people together to work toward a shared vision for the common good.
Join panelists Deborah Ameen, Brad Hicks, Jim Maddux, and Anne Root to explore key messages from Jim Collins' work translating years of research on effective business leadership into five guiding goals for nonprofit leaders, including:
- Measuring success without a bottom line
- Getting things done in a diffuse power structure
- Getting the right people on board
- Financial sustainability
- Gaining momentum through building organizational identity
You can preview Jim Collins' essay Good to Great and the Social Sectors: Why Business Thinking Is Not the Answer, as well as listen to audio clips of Jim Collins' interviews.
