Advanced Grant Strategies
Rick Levine, Grant Writer, Trainer, and Consultant
Barbara Gibbs, Program Director, Meyer Memorial Trust
November 12, 2009
8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Registration includes continental breakfast and lunch
Event Description
Join Rick Levine, one of the most senior grantwriters in the Northwest, and Barbara Gibbs, Program Director at Meyer Memorial Trust, to learn what foundation and corporate grant makers expect of experienced grant writers. In this competitive grant seeking climate, it is more important than ever to have well-targeted and finely crafted proposals. Receive direct feedback about your proposals while working in small groups with a staff person of a major regional funder.
The proposal reviewers will include:
- Shelley Hanson and Louis King, Spirit Mountain Community Fund
- Paul Reich, Meyer Memorial Trust
- Jeff Anderson, Oregon Community Foundation
- Glen Friedman, Hoover Family Foundation
- Jan Kennedy, MJ Murdock Charitable Trust
You will also get to meet some of the major foundation trustees who make the final decisions on your proposals and learn how and why they make their funding decisions. We'll talk with them directly about how their priorities and expectations change in tough economic times.
The trustee panel will include:
- John Castles, MJ Murdock Charitable Trust
- Julie Vigeland, Wessinger Foundation and Jackson Foundation
- Jim Meyer, Northwest Health Foundation
Don't miss this opportunity to:
- See your proposal through funders' eyes
- Engage in small group discussions with regional program officers
- Hear trustee perspectives on grants decisions
- Build relationships through personal interactions
- Sharpen your writing skills
Preparation
Bring eight (8) copies from a two-page summary of a current or recent grant proposal. This narrative description should completely describe your program. If the writing sample is for a funder with specific requirements, please re-format the information so that all aspects of the project/program are covered. Foundation representatives have asked that participants view this as a learning opportunity, and suggest that people not bring material that has already been highly successful.
Using this material, you will join experienced peers and leading grant makers for feedback about your strategy and presentation. You will learn to recognize the strengths of your work and spot bad habits, including weakly presented material and unfounded assumptions. Come away with new skills to increase the likelihood of getting your proposals funded.
Audience
This workshop is designed specifically for experienced grant writers who have written at least three proposals that led to funding.
